Screaming Clouds (2022)Â
Screaming Clouds is inspired by the appearance of polar stratospheric clouds that form
in the polar winter before sunrise or after sunset. I am colorblind and therefore have a difficult
time pinpointing exact colors in different images of these clouds and wanted to reflect this
unique feeling of uncertainty through music. Screaming Clouds consists of what I envision as a
“loud confusion of color” through the use of quarter-tone accidentals, vibraphone, cello, and
sine waves. The idea is further replicated through drones and unexpected interruptions and
transformations of them. Consonance and dissonance are given new meaning in the
composition through a contrast and experimentation of interval relationships between the
standard tuning system and microtones.
