Mutation is a quartet written for Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Piano, and Double Bass. The piece focuses on my primary compositional goal during my freshman year at the University of Miami Frost School of Music: the ability to fully realize and develop my musical ideas throughout a composition. My objective when composing Mutation was to take a small number of compositional ideas and allow them to freely mutate throughout the piece. The quartet also relies on spatial techniques to further the effects of dynamics and concept of distance on the overall sound of the piece.
